Network Migration

Because our existing network software (Netware) has reached its "end-of-life" as a product line, Humanities Information Systems is preparing to install a new network infrastructure this summer. Users will encounter some minor changes in how they log in to the network, create passwords, and locate their folders — changes described in more detail below.

This site will be updated with new information regarding the migration as needed, but if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact HIS Support Services (hishelp@osu.edu).

Q: When will the migration happen?
A: The migration is tentatively scheduled to begin Friday August 3 and proceed through the 6. The actual migration may take more or less time.

Q: What if I will be out of town during the migration?
A: These will be handled on a case by case basis depending on when you are leaving and returning and what kind of computer you use. If you will be out of town for the migration, please contact HIS Support Services so we can make arrangements.

Q: How will I know if my computer has been migrated when I was not at my desk?
A: The support staff who works on your computer will leave a sticky note with the date your machine was migrated. Please keep this note on your computer until September 1st so we may keep track of the machines already migrated.

Q: How will the migration affect individual users?
A: Following the migration, there will be noticeable changes to:
  • How you log into the network and your computer.
  • The location of shared spaces used by individual users, teams, and departments. The paths to these folders will change. For example: your home folder will no longer be contained within your department's folder.
  • The names of some shared spaces. Many of these have outdated or inconsistent names that will be updated.
  • The password you use for the current network will not carry over. You will be issued a new password which you will have to change the first time you log in to the new network.
  • There are new rules regarding password length and content (see below).
Q: What are the new rules regarding passwords?
A: The migration will NOT affect your OSU account for email, grades, etc... That password will remain unchanged.
To view your temporary password:
https://humanities.osu.edu/osuauth/his/mig/

To reset your password:
https://humanities.osu.edu/osuauth/his/changeadpassword/

All passwords must now be at least seven characters long. You cannot reuse passwords. Passwords will be good for 90 days, at which point you must reset them. Your password must consist of characters from at least three of the following four categories:
  • Upper Case Letters A-Z
  • Lower Case Letters a-z
  • Numbers 0-9
  • Symbols ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ - = + [ ] { } \ | < > , . / ? ` ~
To help remember your password, try to come up with a word or three that you will easily remember and substitute numbers and symbols into the password (ie: Hum@n!tie5 ).

Q: What will happen to the files in my network folder?
A: The files contained within your personal network folders will be moved for you during the migration process and will now be located on the N: drive. The new path to your personal files will be:
  • PC Users
    N:\<Your Network Files>
  • Mac Users
    HumData\Users\<Your User Name>\<Your Network Files>
Q: What will happen to the files in my department's network folder?
A: Since not all academic units within the College are departments, we are now using the term "units" when referring to projects, centers, and departments collectively. The files contained within your unit's network folders will be moved for you during the migration process and will now be located on the O: drive. The new path to unit files will be:
  • PC Users
    O:\<Unit Name>\<Unit Network Files>
  • Mac Users
    HumData\Units\<Unit Name>\<Unit Network Files>

Q: I don't store any files on the network. Do I still need to go through the migration process?
A: Yes. All Humanities computers must be upgraded for compatibility with the new network. You will not be able to log in to the new network until this is done.

Q: I use MacOS instead of Windows. Do I still need to go through the migration process?
A: Yes. There are settings that must be applied to your Mac to allow it to see the new servers.

Q: Will the migration affect files stored locally on my computer?
A: Files stored on your local hard drive will have the same names and folders and will appear to be located in the same place.

Q: Will the migration affect my Web site?
A: Yes. All Web sites currently on the Humanities Web servers will be moved to the new environment. This process will be done for you during the migration but there will be a change freeze on Web files to ensure that no data loss occurs. You will receive email from Web services as we get closer to the migration to inform you of specific times and dates. The paths to your files will change, but Internet users will still access your sites from the same URL.

Due to the necessity of re-programming college, department and personal Web pages to acknowledge the changes caused by the migration, HIS Web Services has scheduled a time slot between July 30 and August 12, during which we will NOT be making requested changes to any Web sites nor adding information to databases. Unless a change is urgent, please do not send nor expect it to be made during this time. Change requests will again be honored beginning on August 13.

Q: What access will I have to my files from outside the College of Humanities?
A: You will still have more than one way to access your files from outside the College (home, classrooms, etc...).
