Astaro Security Gateway

The Astaro Security Gateway is a new technology that combines firewall, virus scanning, and spyware protection into one system. The purpose of the unit is to intercept viruses and spyware on web pages before they can reach your computer. There will be some small, but noticeable, differences in your web surfing as a result of the Astaro’s scanning.

When Downloading Files

As you download files you will sometimes get this screen:
Initial download screen in Astaro.
This indicates that the file is currently being downloaded and scanned by the Astaro. When the Astaro completes this you will get the following:
Download complete screen in Astaro.
This is the screen where you can retrieve your file from the Astaro now that it has completed downloading and scanning it. To download your file, follow the directions on the screen.

Normal Web Surfing

While you are visiting various websites, you may occasionally see a message like these:
Downloaded content blocked screen in Astaro.
URL blocked screen in Astaro.
These messages occur when the Astaro detects one of a variety of threats. The message will explain what it just blocked and why. You may also see one of these messages on a webpage instead of some of the content. Usually this is because that piece of the webpage is using suspicious or malicious code.

If the Astaro blocks content that you think should be allowed, please contact hishelp@osu.edu or, if it is urgent, call 292-8662.
