Accessing FTP Shares from On or Off-Campus

To access File Shares from Off-Campus:

To access your Humanities user share from off-campus, Humanities Information Systems supports two university-provided secure ftp clients, Core FTP (Windows) and Fetch (Macintosh). These applications can be downloaded for free from OSU's site licensed software Web site at this URL: http://osusls.osu.edu/

Accessing FTP Shares using Core FTP in Windows XP

CoreFTP Site Manager Window.
  1. Access the Site Manager clicking on Sites > Site Manager in the menu bar.
  2. After specifying a site name, enter the following information:
    1. Host names:
      1. humftp-users.cohums.ohio-state.edu (your personal files)
      2. humftp-units.cohums.ohio-state.edu (department files)
      3. humftp-web.cohums.ohio-state.edu (web files)
    2. Your Humanities network name# username and password
    3. Port 22 for secure ftp (make sure the SSH/SFTP checkbox is checked).
  3. Click on Connect to connect to the Humanities FTP server.
  4. Click Yes when asked if you want to store the key in the SSH cache.

Working with Files using Core FTP in Windows

To download files to your off-site computer using Core FTP, navigate to the desired directory and file, then click on the file or folder it to select it, and click on the blue Download icon (the button with the blue arrow) or drag and drop the file or folder onto your Windows desktop. When downloading a file, you’ll see its progress at the bottom of the Core FTP window.

Accessing FTP Shares using Fetch in OS X

New Connection in Fetch Window.
  1. When Fetch opens, it takes you to the New Connection window.
  2. To setup your initial connection to your Humanities network share, enter the following information:
    1. Host names:
      1. humftp-users.cohums.ohio-state.edu (your personal files)
      2. humftp-units.cohums.ohio-state.edu (department files)
      3. humftp-web.cohums.ohio-state.edu (web files)
    2. Your Humanities network name# username and password
    3. Select a SFTP connection from the Connect using: dropdown menu
  3. Click on Connect to connect to the Humanities FTP server.

Working with Files using Fetch in OS X

To download files to your off-site computer using Fetch, navigate to the desired directory and file, then click on the file or folder it to select it, and click on the Get icon or drag and drop the file or folder to your Macintosh desktop. When downloading a file, you’ll see its progress at the bottom of the Fetch window.
